The S&P 500 has made a new high and is now up over 8% for the year. September is historically a volatile and unprofi table month of the year. The risk of a market correction continues to loom in the back of most traders’ minds including myself. There has been no correction of 10% or more on the S&P 500 for almost three years.

Recently, the shares ran into resistance at their 80-day and 160-day moving averages, which could pressure the stock lower. Therefore, we are recommending a new short position at current levels.

Worldwide economic leadership is moving towards the U.S. The ISM Manufacturing Index was unexpectedly strong here, while data from overseas remain weak. As a result, we saw Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar jump in anticipation of a possible Fed response to better U.S. growth, while gold and oil prices sagged on prospects for moderate overall worldwide demand and, in the case of oil, continued steady supplies.

The at home beverage behemoth has been a big loser this year, down more than 33% year to- date. During the past month, the shares have rebounded from the round-number $30 level back to their descending 80-day moving average, which coincides with the February and June lows.

2 September 2014 | 2:30 PM
Cabot Wealth AdvisoryPaul Goodwin Check

The market performed well overall last week, but Thursday morning saw dramatic gaps down in all three major indexes. The S&P 500 closed Wednesday just above 2000, then opened Thursday at 1997, before falling as low as 1990.5. Watching the market Thursday morning, you could be forgiven for assuming that the indexes were reacting to some pretty bad news.
