So, as a counterpoint to the Boston Strong movement (which experience tells me likely peaked today as I watched the marathon’s finish), I want to share a big intellectual idea—a big National Idea— that is not at all widespread, never mind popular, but that I think deserves consideration.

After a huge fourth quarter in 2013, the shares pulled back earlier this year, but have partially recovered in the past month. This momentum could signal the beginning of a move to new highs for the stock.

Many markets remain in the very important and urgent (to review) category – which grew again the past week. So, I will strive to get as many of the most urgent (and a few less urgent, but very important) situations updated in this issue. One which caught the attention of many (based on Internet and television “chatter”) has been the break of a rising channel in the Nasdaq.

In this week’s Stock Market Video, Mike Cintolo talks about the possibility that last Tuesday was a near-term market low. While the intermediate-term trend is still down, Mike believes the wheat will begin to separate from the chaff should the market bounce and as earnings season progresses. He’s not advising too much buying, but he goes over a few growth stocks showing early signs of resilience, as well as a bunch of commodity-related stocks that have popped to new highs. After growing sales 54% in 2010-2011, semiconductor giant Intel (INTC) has seen revenues flatten out the past two years in the $53 billion range. The tech titan has only reported one losing quarter in the past 12 years, and earnings per share are expected to grow 6% this year. The Dow component also pays out a 3.3% dividend.

The number of qualifying ETFs continues to drift a little lower, with 111 making the grade compared to 119 and 125 in the two previous reports. Ten of the top 50 ETFs are below their 50-day moving average. We continue to see a shift out of solar, biotech and social media-driven ETFs with energy, emerging markets and tech now among the stronger areas. Value is winning out over growth and bigger is better as investors flee to safety or shift dollars into new groups showing momentum.

2 for 1 Stock SplitNeil Macneale Professional

For the first two months of 2014, the 2 for 1 portfolio has lagged the market and is down about one percent from its 2013 close. March is better, so far, but my point here is that it’s hard to see the forest for the trees sometimes.

Hidden Values AlertCharles Mizrahi Professional

If you block out all the market noise, keep in mind that the Nasdaq hit an all-time high less than six weeks ago. Listening to the financial media and other investors, you might think that the recent price “tumble” of about 8%, from peak to valley, has all the makings of a market crash. After the tremendous run that the market had since the March 2009 bottom, a small pullback is not unexpected. Investors need to put the recent slide into perspective.
