In 1898 Henry Timken obtained a patent to improve how wheels rotated. The next year he incorporated the Timken Roller Bearing Company. Within a couple of years he opened a bearing and axle production plant in Canton, Ohio. During WWI he invested in steelmaking operations to ensure a reliable supply of steel for bearing production. This helped to create a more vertically integrated manufacturing process.

U.S. stock futures slipped Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average set up to push further below 17,000, while deal news sent shares of Family Dollar Stores Inc. soaring in premarket. More recently, the shares took a sharp bounce off their rising 80-day moving average — which currently coincides with the stock’s February and May highs, and the round-number $70 level. We are recommending a new long position at current levels as WAG looks ready to overtake its all-time high of $76.39, tagged this past June.

Amzn, Klac, SbuxU.S. stocks: Nasdaq Futures Looks Weak As Amazon Tumbles
25 July 2014 | 9:10 AM

Stock futures leaned lower Friday, as Inc. tumbled in premarket trade after disappointing results and Xerox Corp. and Starbucks Corp. also down post-earnings. A single piece of economic data — orders for durable goods — awaits investors. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJU4 +0.01% fell 17 points to 16,981, while those for the S&P 500 index SPU4 -0.15% eased 3 points to 1,977.70. Bigger pain was showing up on futures for the Nasdaq-100 index NDU4 -0.30% , down 11.25 points, or 0.3%, to 3,960.60.

More recently, HTZ has been trying — and failing — to fill the downside gap created in early June, which coincides not only with the round-number $30 mark, but also the stock’s year-to-date break even level. With multiple layers of technical resistance forming overhead, we are recommending a new short position at current levels on HTZ.

Systems and ForecastsMarvin Appel Standard

New claims for unemployment insurance hit an eight year low today (see chart below from the St. Louis Fed website), surprising economists. The rate of claims for unemployment insurance is a very volatile piece of data from week to week even though the longer term trends are evident. It is a leading employment indicator, so good news on this front, assuming that it continues, will lead to better employment in the months to come.
